Centrally located on the former island lies Museum Schokland on the terp De Middelbuurt, just a stone's throw away from De Gesteentetuin. The wooden sea defense is visible from afar, and the characteristic little church near the museum remains a beacon in the new land, which was once the busy Zuiderzee.
The museum's permanent exhibition takes you on a journey from the Ice Age to the present day. The unique archaeological finds make history tangible. Wandering through the centuries, the story comes to life. Island residents share stories about their home, which they were eventually forced to leave. Young visitors can try their hand as archaeologists or dyke builders.
